Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Nguni Bantu word from Southern and Eastern Africa, and one of the most precise descriptions of human nature ever compressed into a single syllable. It means that personhood is not something you possess. It is something that happens between people. You do not become fully yourself alone.

Desmond Tutu used it to hold a nation together after apartheid. Nelson Mandela used it to explain why forgiveness was not weakness. In 2004, a technologist named it the operating system he wanted everyone to have for free, because he understood that software, like humanity, is built collectively or not meaningfully at all.

The word has survived colonialism, apartheid, and the tech industry. It is still true.

The person who buys this shirt might be a developer who remembers what open source was supposed to mean. Or a manager who has sat through too many all hands about individual performance metrics. Or someone who just knows the word from their grandmother and never needed a computer to teach it to them.

All of those people are right.
