Ma'at
$32.98
Ma'at: Truth, justice, and cosmic balance is the Egyptian principle that predates the word "ethics." The feather weighed against the heart.
The ancient Egyptians believed the universe ran on a principle they called ma'at: truth, justice, and the right ordering of things (not as ideals to aspire to but as forces that either held the world together or didn't, depending on how you lived).
When you died, your heart was weighed against a feather. The feather belonged to Ma'at herself. If your heart was lighter, you passed. If it was heavier, burdened by cruelty or dishonesty or the accumulated weight of a life lived sideways, it was devoured.
The standard wasn't perfection. It was lightness...
Three thousand years later, the feather is still the measure.
